The original double bevelled case back is probably the best example we’ve seen, with the Omega hippocampus, logo and lettering barely worn. The case back is engraved on the inside with 105.003-63. The later Omega tachymeter bezel is in in excellent condition with no scratches visible to the naked eye.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe original tritium stepped dial featuring the narrow T SWISS MADE T inscription is in fantastic condition and shows an attractive fading. The lume has mellowed to a wonderful faded yellow and the hands are in good condition given their age. There are however small signs of aging when viewed under a 4X loupe and we suspect the hands have been re-lummed sometime in the past.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThis Speedmaster is powered by the highly regarded calibre 321. Having just undergone a thorough service and calibration, the watch is in solid working order. In fact, the Omega Speedmaster 105.003 is one of our favourite watches ever made. It’s attractive, durable, historically significant and highly collectable.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eLaunched in 1963 the reference 105.003 replaced the 2998 and was the watch worn by astronaut Ed White on NASA’s first EVA spacewalk on the Gemini IV mission. This would set the scene for the 105.012 to be selected for the NASA Apollo missions.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eTo reach this stage, in late 1964 to early 1965 the Speedmaster was pitted against watches from Rolex and Longines in a series of 11 strenuous tests designed to examine the ability of watches to withstand the stresses of an EVA in space. The Rolex and Longines failed, the Omega passed and the rest, as they say, is history as the successors of the 105.003 would go on to cement the Omega Speedmaster as “The Moonwatch”.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe 105.003 was the last of the Speedmasters to feature straight lugs and was also the last to not include a crown guard. The 1019 headed in a different stylistic direction to its predecessor losing the honeycomb dial in favour of a smooth black or white dial. Examples up to the 105.012-65 were fitted with a double-bevel case-back and a single bevel thereafter.  \u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eOn the dial front, the 105.012 was the first reference to include the ‘Professional’ inscription. Previously it was suggested this was added from July 1965 following NASA’s certification of the Speedmaster for its astronauts. However more recent research has confirmed the \u003cem\u003eProfessional \u003c\/em\u003einscription was in fact included from the start of production of the 105.012 in early 1964. We were also developing new drilling equipment for our supplier at the same time. I worked in Saudi for about five years before returning home, however I continued working as an exploration diamond driller all over the world as well as in the last of the Cornish tin mines before they closed but I never went back to Saudi to work.\"\u003c\/em\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eIn recent years demand for unpolished examples such as this coming from the original, single owner with recorded providence have far exceeded that for polished “full set” examples that have passed through multiple owners.
