The Patek Philippe Ellipse is one of the oldest and most iconic watches in the company’s catalogue. First released in 1968, the Ellipse quickly found a following among watch collectors and enthusiasts for its unique ovular case shape and elegant styling. While the watch has seen changes and diversification over the years, the underlying essential form has persisted.
The ovular case shape was uncommon in the watch market when it was first released, but it quickly found itself a cult following. The sleek design and comfortable fit made it a popular choice for everyday wear, and the high-quality construction ensured that it would last for years.
The dazzling, cobalt blue dial was another revolutionary step for the company. By the beginning of the 1960s, as part of its research commitment, together with their partners Patek had begun to test the realms of alchemy by altering the very nature of gold itself. It experimented relentlessly with all types of gold until it really did create something new: blued gold.
The Ellipse was also noted for its pioneering in marketing as it was the first Patek Philippe family of watches supported by a full range of accessories. This included lighters, cufflinks, rings and money clips.
Today, the Patek Philippe Ellipse is one of the most sought-after watches in the world. Its classic styling and enduring appeal make it a must-have for any serious collector.
As for the watch we have here, it's a stunning example of the reference 3548/1, the first reference of the Ellipse. Featuring a mesmerising cobalt blue starburst dial and 18k yellow gold case and bracelet. The dial's standout design was achieved through vacuum plating, resulting in a stunning cobalt blue colour that looks as good today as it did when released. The 3548 was powered by the manual wind calibre 23-300 movement.
