Often known as the “Warrior Watch”, the Rolex Air-King has a long and storied history dating back to the mid 1930’s. Originally developed to honour the British fighter pilots during World War II, the Air-King is praised by collectors for its simple athletics, accuracy and robustness.
The reference 5500 was introduced in 1957 and used one of two movements, the 1520 or the 1530. You can tell the difference between the two, not by looking at the movement but the dial, where the word “Precision” (or no text) denotes the 1520 calibre whereas the presence of “Super Precision” denotes the 1530 calibre. With a production run of 37 years, the reference 5500 came with a huge number of dial variations.
