The 1970 Steel Rolex Datejust Reference 1603: A Blend of History and Style
Allow us to introduce you to a piece that gracefully marries history with modern style: the steel Rolex Datejust reference 1603 from the remarkable year of 1970. This isn't merely a watch; it's a wearable narrative, seamlessly weaving together the grand history of Rolex with an enduring style that feels at home in both casual and formal settings.
A Tribute to Rolex’s Remarkable Legacy
In the vibrant timeline of Rolex, the year 1945 marked a milestone with the inception of the Datejust series, commemorating their 40th anniversary. This innovative creation was a game-changer, introducing the world to an automatic movement displaying the date prominently in a window on the dial. Fast forward to the early 1960's and the 160X series of Datejust was launched, which included the reference 1603.
Decoding the 1603: A Unique Blend of Heritage and Precision
Let's venture deeper into the 1603’s charm, a reference that stands as a significant marker in Rolex's journey. The 160X series, including this gem, was known for its workhorse movements, retaining the traditional manner of adjusting the date by rotating the hands, a feature that was updated in the later 160XX series which incorporated a quick-set date function.
Specifically, the '3' in 1603 signifies the distinctive engine-turned bezel, a standout feature that adds a different flair compared to the fluted bezel represented by the '1' in the 1601 series. This subtle differentiation in bezel design allows for a delightful variety within the Datejust collection, letting collectors choose a piece that truly resonates with their style and preference.

Do watches come with original box and papers?
It depends on the individual watch. You can see details under "The Basics" heading on this page. For the majority of vintage watches their original box and papers have been lost to time. Whilst they are nice to have, it’s important to note that “box and papers” DO NOT authenticate a watch despite what many in our trade say. It’s also important to realise alot of sellers (including some of the most well known in the UK) put together full sets of box, papers, hang tags etc by buying blank paperwork and boxes in the secondary market. This is a very regrettable, but unfortunately common occurrence in the trade but something we will never do!
How do I know it will fit?
For metal bracelets we provide the size it will currently fit in the description section of this page. If this measurement is too large or too small we are able to assist in either adding or removing links. We also offer this service, post service on a at-cost basis (i.e. we don't add a margin).
Can you change the strap?
Absolutely! If you don't like the current strap, let us know and we'll change it for free! We maintain a broad selection of styles and can also source straps to your specification free of charge.
