An excellent example of the highly collectable Rolex Explorer Ref 6610 with a well-maintained case and original gilt chapter-ring black dial.
Originally introduced in 1959, the Explorer Ref 6610 was powered by the ‘Officially Certified Chronometer’ grade 1030 movement, housed in a 36mm waterproof Oyster case. The reference was produced for only 5 years before being replaced by the ref. 1016 making it a rare and highly collectable piece.

Background:
As an original supporter of Himalayan exploration since 1933, Rolex had created watches made for explorers that featured a highly visible dial and special lubricants that allowed functionality between -20° C and +40° C. Once the initial Everest summit was completed in 1953, Rolex added the name Explorer to these watches to capitalise on the accomplishment, as Sherpa Tenzing Norgay was wearing one when he reached the top.
